YMCA NEWCOMER ACADEMY PROGRAM
Are you looking for a unique volunteer opportunity? The YMCA's Newcomer Academy Program is an after school academic and sports program for middle and high school students attending the ESL Newcomer Academy. A program of the Downtown Family YMCA, our primary focus is to create a welcoming, educational environment for immigrant and refugee children new to the United States.
In the fall, students will receive academic support and develop short-and long-term goals for personal success. Spring programming will also include organized soccer and other recreational activities.
Volunteer tutors are needed primarily in the areas of math, reading and English. No teaching experience is required, just a passion for education and interest in working with people from different cultures.
Ideal time commitment is once a week on a regular schedule for 60-90 minutes after school. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and complete a background check.
