The Y has been teaching swimming for over 100 years with nationally-certified and highly-trained instructors. Our lessons focus on essential, life-saving skills and techniques while helping encourage swimming as an excellent tool for lifelong wellness. Swim lessons provide a wealth of benefits that go far beyond the water.
YMCA swim lessons are available year-round at multiple locations and are designed to ensure safety, success and fun for all participants. Lessons are available for all ages, starting as early as 6 months old. Whether you are a beginner or just want to improve your skills in the water, we have a class that is right for you!
We know during this time you are concerned about your children remaining healthy and safe while they continue to build their skills in the water. We want you to be confident that safety is our top priority and we will follow all CDC guidelines, along with those from state and local officials to ensure we provide the healthiest environment possible. We continue to evaluate new information, and if for any we must cancel an upcoming program, you will receive a full refund or credit.

SWIM LESSON CLASS LEVELS
SWIM STARTERS - PARENT/CHILD (AGES 6 MO-3 YRS)
Parents accompany their infant or toddler in the water, exploring fundamentals like blowing bubbles, back floats and essential safety around water skills.
SWIM BASICS - PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONS (AGES 3-5 YRS)
Swimmers will progress through classes that help teach safety around the water, increase comfort with underwater exploration, introduce self-rescue skills, encourage forward movement and momentum. Classes will also introduce rhythmic breathing with integrated movements.
SWIM STROKES - SCHOOL-AGE SWIM LESSONS (AGES 6-12 YRS)
Swimmers that have advanced beyond Swim Basics will progress through learning techniques for front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke kick, butterfly kick and elementary backstroke. Safety skills are reinforced through continued work on treading water and sidestroke. More advanced swimmers will refine technique for all major competitive strokes.
STROKE & TURN CLINICS - ENDURANCE/TECHNIQUE BASED CLASSES (AGES 6-12 YRS)
This is an advanced level course. The purpose is to perfect already mastered swim basics. The class is designed to work on endurance and technique simultaneously.
PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS - ONE ON ONE INSTRUCTION (AGES 4 & UP)
Private lessons focus on one on one attention; this is beneficial for swimmers ranging from beginners to those seeking instruction in advanced technique. To learn about private swim lesson options, please contact the YMCA at Norton Commons at 502.882.9622.
