I have struggled with my weight for years. I exercised at the YMCA daily and still never lost weight. Debbie's DPP class has taught me how to look at what I eat. That combined with my exercise program has allowed me to lose 12 pounds. I am so pleased and feel so much better physically and mentally.

At the age of 58, and after many years of battling my weight, my health was starting to be affected by my lifestyle choices. My blood sugar had crept up over 100, my cholesterol and triglycerides were high, and I now had fatty liver disease. For many years I had ignored my family history of having a grandmother, father, aunt, and cousin diagnosed with diabetes. My own health scare was the "wake-up call.” I knew it was time to get serious about my health. So I contacted my health insurance provider for a referral and they recommended that I join the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program.

The moment I began this program I knew I would be successful. Meeting in a group setting with others (that were going through the same thing) was just the support I needed. Each session builds on teaching us how to make permanent healthy choices. I have become more aware of my food selection and have learned that I can still enjoy tempting food in moderation. I now realize the importance of exercise and that it comes in many forms. We can all find something that we enjoy doing. This IS NOT a diet, it’s a comprehensive lifestyle change.

I have lost over 35 pounds in 4 months, I have tons of energy, and I’ve watched my cholesterol, triglycerides, and fatty liver return to normal. My blood glucose has been improving, as well. My health has greatly improved!

I know of several relatives who have or had diabetes. My father had diabetes and he came to visit me in Germany in the 1990s while I was in the Army and he was having to give himself insulin injections in his stomach. My mother's third husband also had diabetes and suffered a fatal traffic accident due to a diabetes blackout. I know it sounds melodramatic, but the Y's diabetes prevention program saved me from a fate worse than death. I recognize that I did the work and lost the weight, but the program gave me a framework, guidance, and the support that enabled success.

I knew the best way to manage diabetes is to not develop it in the first place, but the DPP showed me how. I cannot overstate how much the DPP and Rick helped me. I am in debt to Rick and the Y, and will do whatever I can to pay it forward.

First off, I want to give all glory to God! I am so thankful for this opportunity. My weight loss journey started sitting at my desk at Norton Healthcare, looking through the company’s event page and noticing the "Diabetes Prevention Program with the YMCA.” I was already a YMCA member, so this caught my attention. Once I clicked on the link and read about the one year long program, I knew at that moment, I needed to do this. I had never been in a one year program before for weight loss. I have tried other weight loss programs, but something about this one seemed so different. Sign up was so easy and the Diabetes Prevention Specialists at the YMCA were always available via email or phone. I emailed a specialist right away to inform them that I was interested.

What I love about the program is that it is focused on everyone’s individual health. This program teaches you not to just lose weight, but to keep it off for a lifetime. I love how my primary care doctor ties into the program as well. She follows all of my blood work and weight loss goals, as I keep going through the program. I have been to my primary care doctor probably three times this year and she has already seen my cholesterol and A1C levels go down. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone that is willing to lose weight, receive advice about how to make this lifestyle change and wants to be successful. The best part about this program, would be my coach, Rick! He is amazing! He has lost a significant amount of weight and gives us real advice that shows real results. I’m so blessed and honored that fate linked us together. This program so far has saved my life and I’m so grateful for another chance.
