Finding Strength and Support at the Y: Shelby’s Story

For Shelby Durmic, a member of the YMCA at Appliance Park, the Y is more than just a place to work out—it’s been a life-changing part of her journey.
Working just steps away from the on-site YMCA, Shelby has built a consistent routine of exercising before her shift each day. That routine, she says, has been nothing short of transformative.
“I have suffered from chronic illness for most of my life and I’ve discovered that maintaining a consistently active lifestyle and workout routine five days a week has been an absolute life saver,” Shelby shared. “Getting in that workout every day has allowed me to do things that otherwise wouldn’t be possible.”
One of those accomplishments was completing her first 5K, something she never imagined possible before finding her rhythm at the Y.
But for Shelby, it’s not just about the workouts—it’s about the people. “The staff is so supportive and actually care about the members and their health and fitness goals. I have never hesitated to speak to them about my concerns, and they are always there to listen.”
On days when motivation is harder to come by, Shelby says the Y’s group fitness classes give her the extra encouragement she needs. “The classes they offer are so fun and extremely motivational for the days that I just don’t have it in me to put together a routine. No matter the reason you show up, you are always glad that you did!”
Shelby’s story is a powerful reminder of how the Y meets people where they are—helping them build healthy habits, achieve new goals, and feel supported every step of the way.
