Program Details

Program Details

This free program helps kids build confidence and essential safety skills to stay strong around pools and other aquatic environments.

  • Ages: 3 to 14 years
  • Cost: Free to all participants
  • Schedule: Typically offered during the summer
  • Locations: Offered at various YMCA of Greater Louisville branches; contact your local Y for availability

How It Works

The Safety Around Water program is designed to provide access to pools and foundational water safety skills for children who may not have access to formal swim lessons. The curriculum helps kids learn how to swim short distances and return to safety on their own.

Skills Taught Include:

  • Putting face in the water
  • Submerging the head
  • Jumping in, turning, and grabbing the wall
  • Swimming at least five feet without flotation
  • Back floating for safety

By the end of the program, children will be better equipped to navigate aquatic environments and avoid common water hazards.

Water Safety Tips

For Parents:

  • Always supervise children and avoid distractions like phones or books

  • Teach kids to ask permission before entering water

  • Never rely solely on lifeguards—stay alert

  • Use Coast Guard-approved life jackets—not floaties or pool toys

  • Educate children on pool hazards like drains and deep water

For Kids:

  • Never swim alone

  • Avoid holding your breath underwater or playing risky games

  • Wear a life jacket if you’re not a strong swimmer

  • If a friend is struggling, throw something—don’t jump in

  • Stay away from pool drains and always check depth before jumping
