How It Works

Y-NOW is a 10-month mentoring program for Louisville youth ages 11–15 who have a parent who is—or has been—incarcerated or struggling with substance use. Through consistent support and a trusted community of peers and adults, Y-NOW helps youth overcome stigma, build confidence, and reach their full potential. There is no cost to participate.

Y-NOW begins with a 3-day retreat where youth explore their lives, choices, and goals in a safe, supportive setting. From there, each youth is matched with a trained, thoroughly screened adult mentor who commits to:

  • One phone call per week
  • One in-person meeting per week
  • Twice-monthly group sessions
  • Special events throughout the year (including service projects, family days, and a graduation ceremony)

Case management continues throughout the 10 months—and beyond—to ensure each youth, caregiver, and mentor receives the support they need to succeed.

Get Involved with Y-NOW

Refer a youth or become a mentor—your support can change the course of a young person’s life.

Refer a Teen

Do you know a youth who could benefit from consistent mentoring and positive support?

Visit our referral form to share basic details about the teen, their caregiver, and any information about the parent’s incarceration or addiction.

Become a Mentor

Y-NOW mentors are caring adults who provide encouragement, consistency, and support. No experience is required—just a willingness to listen and show up.

All mentors complete a volunteer application, background check, and orientation. Ongoing training and support are provided by YMCA Safe Place Services staff.
