Helping Kids Stay Safe in the Digital Space: YMCA of Greater Louisville's Five Days of Action®
In today's connected world, kids are spending more time online than ever—learning, playing, and communicating across apps, games, and platforms. And while technology opens incredible doors, it also opens new risks. That's why YMCA of Greater Louisville is proud to be part of Five Days of Action®, a national movement dedicated to child safety—both in person and in the digital spaces where kids live, learn, and grow.
This year's theme centers on digital safety, equipping families with the knowledge and tools to help children navigate technology responsibly, confidently, and safely.
In 2026, the Y has partnered with Praesidium, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), Lauren's Kids, and the National Children's Alliance to bring even more resources to parents, caregivers, and communities. You'll find all partner resources linked below.
At the Y, We Believe in the Power of Real Connection
At the Y, many of our youth programs are intentionally device-free. No scrolling. No notifications. Just real connection. Through youth sports, swim lessons, summer camps, and more, we create spaces where kids build confidence, friendships, and life skills—face to face. Because while the digital world moves fast, childhood shouldn't. We create safe spaces where kids can unplug and simply be kids.
But we also know that protecting children means meeting them where they are, which includes online.
Recognizing Red Flags: What Parents and Caregivers Should Know
Understanding the warning signs of child sexual abuse—including online grooming—is one of the most powerful tools a trusted adult can have. Certain behaviors may signal low, moderate, or high risk, and they can appear both in person and in digital environments.
The National Children's Alliance has created a helpful resource to guide families through what to watch for. Visit nationalchildrensalliance.org to learn more about red flag behaviors and how to take action early to keep kids safe.
Staying Ahead of Digital Trends
From social apps to online gaming, the digital landscape changes constantly, and it can feel overwhelming to keep up. That's why NCMEC offers free resources designed to help trusted adults understand today's online risks, including sextortion and the growing use of generative AI in targeting young people.
Knowing what kids are encountering online is the first step to talking with them about it. Explore tip sheets and additional tools at ncmec.org.
Monitoring Digital Use: Practical Steps for Families
Did you know that 1 in 5 children who use a digital device will be sexually solicited online?
Having a Cyber P.L.A.N., setting clear boundaries around device use, and teaching kids online safety habits early can make a meaningful difference. Lauren's Kids offers age-specific resources to help you establish healthy digital boundaries, build good cyber habits, and protect your family online.
Join Us. Protect Kids. Take Action.
Child safety is at the heart of everything we do at the Y: in our buildings, on our fields, and in our communities. Five Days of Action® is a reminder that protecting children is everyone's responsibility.
Take the pledge and share this post with someone you know. Let's make sure every child has the safe, supported childhood they deserve.
