How It Works

The BYMOC Strategy is designed for flexible implementation through policies, practices, and programs that are responsive to local community needs. Areas of focus include:

  • Education: Encourage academic success by changing attitudes, building confidence, and teaching key skills.
  • College & Career Readiness: Connect youth to education and meaningful jobs through skills development, financial education, career planning, and mentoring.
  • Character Development: Strengthen social-emotional competencies and values like honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility.
  • Belonging & Community Building: Support identity development, peer and adult relationships, and civic engagement.
  • Health & Well-Being: Promote physical and mental health, nutrition, and strategies to prevent chronic conditions.

Why We Focus on Boys and Young Men of Color

  • They are twice as likely to grow up in poverty
  • More likely to live in neighborhoods of concentrated poverty
  • More likely to fall into poverty as adults, regardless of background

These systemic barriers impact long-term well-being. The YMCA’s strategy invests in the success of boys and young men of color to help them reach their full potential
