At the Y, swim lessons are about more than just technique—they’re about safety, confidence, and personal growth. Our nationally certified swim curriculum supports swimmers of all ages and abilities through clear progressions focused on water safety, endurance, and stroke development.
Lessons are offered year-round and grouped by age and skill level to ensure a supportive, effective learning experience.
Swim Lesson Paths and Levels
Our swim lessons are organized into three experience-based paths:
- Swim Starters (Stages A–B): Parent-child lessons for ages 6 months–3 years
- Swim Basics (Stages 1–3): Foundational water safety and swim competency
- Swim Strokes (Stages 4–6): Stroke technique, endurance, and aquatic fitness
Infant & Toddler (6 months – 3 years)
Stage A – Water Discovery
Water entry, floating, and bonding through guided parent-child activities
Stage B – Water Exploration
Basic movement and water safety readiness with increased comfort and mobility
Preschool (Ages 3–5)
Stage 1 – Water Acclimation
Underwater exploration and basic assisted self-rescue skills
Stage 2 – Water Movement
Independent floating and basic swim, float, swim sequence
Stage 3 – Water Stamina
Improved endurance, self-rescue over longer distances, and comfort with treading
School Age (Ages 5–12), Teen & Adult (12+)
Stage 1–3 – Swim Basics
Covers submersion, glides, swim sequences, basic back and front strokes, and water safety
Stage 4 – Stroke Introduction
Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, and treading
Stage 5 – Stroke Development
Breaststroke and butterfly basics, increased endurance and swim mechanics
Stage 6 – Stroke Mechanics
Refinement of all strokes, flip turns, dives, and increased swim distance
